Taira Koremochi Slaying the Demon Kijo
Series; Mirror of Warriors of Our Country, 1855Taira Koremochi Slaying the Demon Kijo - Incredible original Kuniyoshi scene from the life of the warrior Taira Koremochi (here called Taira Koreshige). While hunting one day, he met a beautiful princess in the woods. After eating and drinking with her, he fell asleep, but received a warning in his dreams that the beauty was in fact Kijo, the demon of Mt. Togakushi, who was waiting to kill him. He awoke from his sleep and saw that the princess had transformed into a demon. The gruesome blue-faced spirit leaps into the air behind him, snarling with bulging eyes. The brave samurai glares up at her steadfastly as he draws his sword, ready to attack. Gusts of wind swirl across the dark sky, sweeping maple leaves through the air. A fantastic composition with the two figures beautifully filling the page. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces and intricately patterned robes. A terrific supernatural subject.
Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)
